Here in Wolverhampton Parks we can often be seen walking as we patrol and inspect the parks, but some people rarely walk anywhere. Some will make a mad dash from where they’ve parked the car or from the bus stop, some will even run to avoid missing another bus or to prevent them being late for an appointment but rarely ever just … walk!
Sometimes to just take your time, enjoying a leisurely stroll can reinvigorate the mind and body – taking away (for a little time at least) some of the pressures and strains of everyday life. When we walk … slowly …. we see more things, we can smell the flowers and the newly mown grass, we sometimes overhear the conversations of others and we can definitely hear the birds singing and the squirrels scurrying.
If you’ve never considered walking before, I’ll give you some things to think about …
- Walking is absolutely free and needs no equipment other than a decent pair of shoes!
- It’s something you can do anytime, anywhere and at any pace and doesn’t need any training or induction
- It’s good for the soul – giving you time for reflection – improving mood, reducing anxiety, aiding sleep and improving self-image
- When you spend time in the outdoors, in contact with the natural environment, can benefit from positive effect on mental health
- It’s good for your health as it improves performance of the heart and lungs as well as circulation
- Lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease/strokes
- By covering just one mile in 20 minutes can burn up at least 100 calories
- You can walk and talk at the same time – encouraging sociability in all of us as we stop to pass pleasantries with those we pass by on the street or in the park.
But the best thing of all about walking is that we can do it with our friends, our husbands/wives, our children, our …
