Get off the grass …
I was asked recently on Twitter, if I ever tweet ‘Get off the grass’.
Now, when I was a lad … way back when, there were signs everywhere and parks weren’t really a place for a young boy and his pals to enjoy, too many rules! In those days, we’d get on our bikes and cycle out of the town and down country lanes; with maybe a jam sandwich, a bottle of water, our swimmers and one of Mum’s old towels. Happy memories of times when you could pop into the municipal baths, as they were called in the old days; have a quick adventure on a bit of waste land and go ‘scrumping‘ all in time for tea. Anyway, back to what I was asked by @Jam3sPJ on Twitter.
No 'scrumping' - Don't eat the apples ...
The only time that we would respectfully ask visitors to stay off the grass; would be:
- if we had recently / or were planning to, sow grass seed
- football match being played
- site being prepared for event eg fair, bowling green/cricket game or other special sports areas that require preparation etc
It’s strange to think that ‘way back when’, such signs were commonplace. You’ll find that park rangers today encourage our visitors to enjoy ‘Wolverhampton’s Great Outdoors’ and if that means running, skipping, jumping or rolling on the grass – that’s just what we’d like to see.
My favourite time of the year is summer – family groups with their picnic baskets, youngsters running around laughing, eating ice-creams, sun-worshippers following the rays throughout the day, Grannies knitting whilst listening to the brass bands … takes me right back ….
